NanChang is a city in eastern China, the capital of Jiangxi Province. Its a regional transport and industrial centre situated near Boyang Lake in the delta of the Gan River. Its manufactured goods include cotton textiles, motor-vehicle equipment, agricultural machinery, processed food, chemicals, and rubber products. Was known in the past as Hung-chou, NanChang is an old walled city dating back to the 2nd century bc. It was formerly an important point on waterways linking northern and southern China, and for a short period in 1927, Communist troops under Zhu De established the first Soviet republic in China. NanChang was developed as an industrial centre after 1949. Population (1990) 1,086,124.
